Retro Gamer hits the big 5-0!
Respected retro magazine hits its first major milestone in
spectacular fashion having been brought back from dead by Imagine

In the continually changing world of magazines, it’s rare for a publication to reach 50 issues and even rarer still when it’s a title as niche as Imagine Publishing’s Retro Gamer.
Available now in all good newsagents, issue 50 is the most jam-packed issue yet and kicks off in grand style by interviewing 50 well-known individuals from within the industry about the games that changed their lives forever.
Sega’s Dreamcast receives pride of place on the cover and reflects the continually changing tastes of Retro Gamer’s readership, while some of the biggest 8-bit and 16-bit games are featured inside. As the rest of the world goes mad for Grand Theft Auto IV, Retro Gamer sticks to its guns and delivers an in-depth ‘making of’ of the original two top-down classics instead. The secrets of the astonishing 16-bit blaster Gunstar Heroes are revealed by Treasure, while Manfred Trenz looks back at his 8-bit hit The Great Giana Sisters. Motörhead’s Lemmy stops by for a chat about his obsession with videogames, artist Roger Dean talks about the amazing art he created for Psygnosis, while Retro Gamer readers reveal their favourite videogame moments.
Editor Darran Jones is already looking forward to the next 50 issues of the UK’s favourite retro magazine: “It’s certainly been a crazy ride and we’d never be here without the groundwork that was laid by former Editor Martyn Carroll and his team, but if I’m really honest, we’re only just getting started. Retro Gamer is a magazine that thrives on its community spirit and as we enter our next 50 issues you’ll see more reader interaction than ever before and some exciting new features.”
Imagine Publishing MD, Damian Butt said: “When we acquired Retro Gamer it was out of pure love for the title and certainly not sound financial reasons, and I firmly believe that because of our culture and passion at Imagine, only we could publish a magazine like this and still be profitable. As we reach this important milestone, I am proud to say that under Darran Jones, the love remains, and Retro Gamer has never been more successful. Here’s to the next 50!”
Imagine Publishing is one of the UK’s fastest growing consumer specialist publishers. Formed in May 2005, it now publishes 20 magazines and 20 websites in the videogames, computing, entertainment and photography markets. An Imagine magazine is purchased every ten seconds.
